What We Do
Fenprobe Talking News, the taped news service for the blind and partially sighted in East Cambridgeshire, brings the local news to over 100 listeners in the area.
Each week a team of volunteers gets together to record the latest stories from the Ely Standard and the Ely Weekly News onto tape. Copies are made and distributed straight away, so that subscribers get the "talking news" just a day later than the newspapers are published. A Post Office concession ensures that tapes can be sent and returned free of charge.
A regular Magazine tape is also produced, focusing on local events and personalities.
There are over forty volunteers who regularly dedicate their time and the news tape is produced fifty-one weeks out of fifty-two, with a break at Christmas.
Fenprobe also records a twice yearly magazine and information leaflets for East Cambridgeshire District Council and "The Hereward Herald" for Hereward Housing Society. These commercial recordings pay our rent and any major purchase is usually supported by donations from fundraising charities.
We are a registered charity (CFB 279355R) and a member of the Talking Newspaper Association of the United Kingdom . The service benefits from the Post Office concession of free postage for blind people and other costs are met through grants and donations.
